In Namibia, cultural customs and beliefs contribute to certain crimes because some crimes under statutory laws do not constitute as a crime for people personally. Politics, colonial dispensation and people’s unawareness of their basic rights have all added to the difficulties. Land ownership, intertribal conflict, and family problems are huge issues in Namibia that I often have to mediate. The course, Building Bridges through Inter Group Dialogue, has improved my ability to use dialogue to facilitate peace.
Viewing the police as reactive instead of proactive, many people have often thought of the police as the enemy. The City Police works to foster a more positive relationship with the community by overseeing projects that uplift the community’s living standard, promote women’s empowerment, and teach people about their fundamental rights. |
